When the famous doctor Zhang Zhongjing returned home one winter, he saw that many villagers were suffering from the cold and hunger, with many having frozen ears. So, he cooked a medicinal soup called “Quhan Jiaoer Soup,” using mutton, chili peppers, and herbs, wrapped in dumpling shapes, and distributed it to the villagers. After eating the dumplings, everyone warmed up, and their ears were no longer frostbitten.
Since then, in northern China, there has been a saying: “Eat dumplings on the Winter Solstice to keep your ears from freezing,” and dumplings have become an indispensable food during the festival.
Tangyuan in the South: A Symbol of Reunion and Sweetness
In contrast to the north, people in southern China prefer to eat tangyuan (sweet rice balls) during the Winter Solstice. The round shape of tangyuan symbolizes reunion and completeness, while its sweet taste represents a happy and fulfilling life.
